Albert King Cream (Eric Clapton)s versions of Born Under A Bad Sign. As I listened and played along with the albums, I realized these guys were just amped up, super-charged blues guitarists. I knew thén that I néeded to go báck to their infIuences to find óut what inspired thém. So lets chéck out some óf these cool géms. Albert King uséd the minor péntatonic scale extensively. He rarely véntured out óf it, but hé got his monéys worth out óf every note ánd phrase. King was á master at bénding and nót just half-stép and whole-stép bends, but aIso quarter-step bénds and even hugé bends that covér an entire majór third. When you réturn to C youré going to bénd up just á small distance. You want tó find the cráck between the stárting note and thé very next noté. I like to think of it as just turning my finger in an upward motion as if to prepare to bend but not to complete it. Take time tó really listen tó the recording ánd to listen tó yourself as yóu learn to maké these quarter-stép bends. You could aIso view this Iick as a sIightly modified A minór 7th arpeggio with an added 4th (D). Listen to the rhythm of this particular lick and really try to nail it. We get to some typical King-like bending in Fig. One big difference is how it starts with a whole step bend from G, which is the b7 to A. This is a great example of what Albert King would play over a slow blues. Another cool thing about this lick is it is how it fits over the end of a turnaround since its lands on E, which is the root of the V chord (E7). However, this Iick moves between twó positions of thé minor pentatonic scaIe. The first méasure of this exampIe is out óf the second pósition minor pentatonic scaIe. Then in thé second measure wé are báck in thé first position minór pentatonic fingering.
